F. Javier Sardina is currently professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). He received his doctorate from USC (1985) and completed postdoctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley (1986-1988).
His basic research focuses on Organic Synthesis and Physical Organic Chemistry and has led to more than 60 publications and 19 doctoral theses. His applied research focuses on the development of scientific software and the generation and application of scientific knowledge to problem-solving in industries such as fashion, cosmetics, food, and retail. This has led to three doctoral theses and collaborations with companies such as the Inditex Group, Zalando, Primark, the TENDAM Group (Cortefiel), Pepe Jeans, and Bimba y Lola, among others. An early exposure to the world of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance during his undergraduate studies introduced him to scientific computing and planted the seed that led him, many years later, to the world of entrepreneurship and to the founding of Mestrelab Research in 2004, a company dedicated to the development of scientific software.
In 2004, at the request of a multinational fashion group, he created and coordinated a team of scientists from diverse fields (chemistry, mathematics, physics, biology, and psychology) to develop innovative solutions in areas such as product health and sustainability of fashion items. The result of this experience was the creation of Sigillum Knowledge Solutions (2018), a company focused on the world of sustainability and quality in various sectors, especially the cosmetics sector.
More recently (2020), he participated in the creation of Celtarys Research, a start-up specialized in the development of chemical tools for diagnostic and research applications in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.
